Monarch Butterflies: Tiny Travelers with an Incredible Story

Every fall, one of the world’s greatest migrations quietly passes through Delaware.

No roaring engines.

No crowded highways.

Just thousands of brilliant orange butterflies drifting south on gentle autumn breezes.

Meet the Monarch Butterfly.

Although they weigh less than a paperclip, monarchs travel as far as 3,000 miles during their annual migration to the mountains of central Mexico. Even more incredible, no single butterfly completes the entire journey. Instead, generation after generation continues a route somehow written into their instincts.

Along Delaware’s coast, monarchs pause to rest and refuel among native wildflowers before continuing south. If you’ve ever watched one floating across a dune or garden, you’ve witnessed a tiny piece of one of nature’s greatest journeys.

Monarchs also remind us that small actions make a big difference. Planting milkweed and native flowers helps provide food and shelter for these remarkable travelers during one of the most important migrations on Earth.

·      Gordon’s Pond
