Diamondback Terrapin: Delaware’s Marshland Treasure

But the Diamondback Terrapin is something entirely different.
It’s the only turtle in North America that spends its life in brackish water—that unique place where fresh water and salt water meet.
That makes Delaware’s salt marshes one of its favorite neighborhoods.
Diamondback Terrapins are expert navigators of winding tidal creeks, muddy marshes, and quiet coves. Their beautifully patterned shells blend perfectly into the landscape, making them surprisingly difficult to spot.
If you do happen to see one sunning itself on a log or paddling across a calm creek…
Consider yourself lucky.
Every shell is different.
Some look like stained glass.
Others resemble intricate mosaics.
It’s one of nature’s finest works of art.
