Sussex Room at Boardwalk Plaza · Rehoboth Beach
Rehoboth may be known for letting loose, but its story began with a very different set of rules. Founded in 1873 as a Methodist camp-meeting town, the community prohibited dancing, card playing and drinking. Fewer than three years later, Bill Bright began testing those boundaries.
Presented by the Rehoboth Beach Historical Society & Museum, Breaking the Rules traces the town’s transformation from religious retreat to seaside playground. Through historic images and stories, the program revisits the orchestras, Punch and Judy shows, vaudeville acts, arcades, rides, theaters, roller rinks and bowling alleys that helped shape life at the beach.
It is a distinctly Rehoboth story: part rebellion, part reinvention and entirely tied to the playful coastal character the town still carries today.
