Painting with Wood: Robert Bruce Weston’s Adventures in Marquetry

  • Peninsula Gallery 520 E Savannah Road Lewes, DE 19958 United States (map)

At Peninsula Gallery, wood becomes both the subject and the medium.

Painting with Wood presents the work of Robert Bruce Weston, a master cabinetmaker who creates intricately constructed images using marquetry—the art of assembling thin pieces of wood veneer into decorative patterns and pictorial compositions.

Weston draws inspiration from the color, texture and grain of each piece of wood. At times, the natural markings within a veneer suggest the direction of the finished image. In other works, carefully selected woods are cut and assembled to recreate landscapes, wildlife and abstract forms.

Rather than concealing the material beneath paint, Weston allows the inherent character of the wood to remain visible. The result is work that feels simultaneously painterly and sculptural, with every line, tonal shift and organic variation contributing to the composition.

The exhibition offers an intriguing meeting point between fine art, craftsmanship, furniture-making traditions and contemporary design—making it an especially strong Ready to ReHo Top Pick for anyone interested in interiors, natural materials or the work of regional artists.

An artist reception will be held Saturday, November 7, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. The exhibition remains on view through November 22.
